Analysis of Compatible Discrete Operator Schemes - for Elliptic Problems on Polyhedral Meshes

چکیده
Compatible schemes localize degrees of freedom according to the physical nature of the underlying fields and operate a clear distinction between topological laws and closure relations. For elliptic problems, the cornerstone in the scheme design is the discrete Hodge operator linking gradients to fluxes by means of a dual mesh, while a structure-preserving discretization is employed for the gradient and divergence operators. The discrete Hodge operator is sparse, symmetric positive definite and is assembled cellwise from local operators. We analyze two schemes depending on whether the potential degrees of freedom are attached to the vertices or to the cells of the primal mesh. We derive new functional analysis results on the discrete gradient that are the counterpart of the Sobolev embeddings. Then, we identify the two design properties of the local discrete Hodge operators yielding optimal discrete energy error estimates. Additionally, we show how these operators can be built from local nonconforming gradient reconstructions using a dual barycentric mesh. In this case, we also prove an optimal L-error estimate for the potential for smooth solutions. Links with existing schemes (finite elements, finite volumes, mimetic finite differences) are discussed. Numerical results are presented on three-dimensional polyhedral meshes.

Vertex-Based Compatible Discrete Operator Schemes on Polyhedral Meshes for Advection-Diffusion Equations
We devise and analyze vertex-based, Péclet-robust, lowest-order schemes for advection-diffusion equations that support polyhedral meshes. The schemes are formulated using Compatible Discrete Operators (CDO), namely primal and dual discrete differential operators, a discrete contraction operator for advection, and a discrete Hodge operator for diffusion. Moreover, discrete boundary operators are...
متن کاملAnalysis of Compatible Discrete Operator Schemes for the Stokes Equations on Polyhedral Meshes
Compatible Discrete Operator schemes preserve basic properties of the continuous model at the discrete level. They combine discrete differential operators that discretize exactly topological laws and discrete Hodge operators that approximate constitutive relations. We devise and analyze two families of such schemes for the Stokes equations in curl formulation, with the pressure degrees of freed...
متن کاملLow-order reconstruction operators on polyhedral meshes: application to compatible discrete operator schemes
We study low-order reconstruction operators on polyhedral meshes, providing a unified framework for degrees of freedom attached to vertices, edges, faces, and cells. We present two equivalent sets of design properties and draw links with the literature. In particular, the two-level construction based on a P0consistent and a stabilization part provides a systematic way of designing these operato...
متن کاملArbitrary-order mixed methods for heterogeneous anisotropic diffusion on general meshes
We devise mixed methods for heterogeneous anisotropic diffusion problems supporting general polyhedral meshes. For a polynomial degree k ě 0, we use as potential degrees of freedom the polynomials of degree at most k inside each mesh cell, whereas for the flux we use both polynomials of degree at most k for the normal component on each face and fluxes of polynomials of degree at most k inside e...
متن کاملFEM with Trefftz trial functions on polyhedral elements
The goal of this paper is to generalize the BEM-based FEM for second order elliptic boundary value problems to three space dimensions with the emphasis on polyhedral meshes with polygonal faces, where even nonconvex elements are allowed. Due to an implicit definition of the trial functions, the strategy yields conforming approximations and is very flexible with respect to the meshes. Thus, it g...
